Radio Show Playlist - 11 December 2014 (Happy Birthday To Me)

For Your Pleasure, Thursday 6:00 - 8:00 pm eastern, CFMU FM 93.3 http://cfmu.msumcmaster.ca/

the show this week fell on my birthday so I thought I'd would be a little more indulgent and present my desert island disc selections, working on the rough guidelines of the BBC 4 radio programme Desert Island Discs
I divided my show into two parts with the first hour playing 8 individual songs with a bonus 4 songs.
The second hour of the show I played songs from 8 albums with 1 bonus selection. Rules I set for album selections were, no greatest hit collections, live albums or box sets.
The Desert Island Disc radio programme also allows its guests 1 luxury item and 1 book. For the record I would choose a towel as my luxury item (fans of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy will understand) and for a book The R. Crumb Handbook .

selections were played in no particular order of preference
click on the links to hear (or see) performances of the songs, hopefully that will give you some insight as to why I've selected them until I have the chance to write further on the reasons.

why do I like an album full of some much pain ? I don't know but I've often listened to these two songs back to back over and over again.
Luke Doucet & the White Falcon - Steel City Trawler - Sundown

a wonderful record, a great cover of a Gordon Lightfoot classic

a record ahead of its time - here are the lyrics to The True Wheel and here you'll find the lyrics (with analysis) to the other songs
The Beatles - The Beatles - Back In The U.S.S.R.
The Beatles - The Beatles - Dear Prudence
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles_%28album%29
the best album by the Beatles ? always a good debate/argument, the fun of the album is trying to decide which songs to get rid of to make it a single disc.
Joni Mitchell - Blue - River

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_%28Joni_Mitchell_album%29
time to start another fight or debate, name Joni Mitchell's best album

The Clash - London Calling - Rudie Can't Fail

if I had to choose one album for a party on a Saturday night, this just might be it

clever album, a delight when listening on headphones
The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main St. - Loving Cup
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exile_on_Main_St.
http://youtu.be/30BISS7Vsk4
sonically this album is a bit of a mess, but it's rock 'n' roll with this beautiful love song

as a bonus album ...

The The - Dusk - Dogs Of Lust
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dusk_%28The_The_album%29
http://youtu.be/7T-c1x0ILWI
another album full of pain & despair

if I could pick 3 more to match the 12 songs total

Miles Davis - Tribute To Jack Johnson
Jesus and Mary Chain - Darklands
Television - Marquee Moon
